Synopsis
Thirteen-year-old Bertie Fields has always noticed the things others overlook. So when her farming town of Nawin begins to change—shops painted the same dull grey, strange signs appearing overnight, and people growing quiet and obedient—she knows something is wrong.
The trail leads to the Rhule Estate, a long-abandoned property on the edge of town. When Bertie uncovers fragments of secret research hidden by her parents and hears whispers of an ancient civilisation known as the Zan’Aethran, she realises the truth has been buried for years.
Investigating with her best friend Maren, Bertie crosses paths with Leonard, a boy taken from the streets and held beneath the estate, and Simi, a quiet teenager who has lived inside its walls for as long as he can remember—and knows its hidden passages better than anyone.
Together, they uncover a disturbing secret: powerful creatures called Falsebound Hybrids are being awakened and controlled through fear and manipulation. Long ago, the Zan’Aethran created these bonds for protection and understanding—but they also left warnings about what could happen if that power was misused.
As Kassian Rhule tightens his grip on the town, the group must decide who they can trust and how far they are willing to go to stop the truth from being buried again.
